“Wave Arising combines music and movement, trance and spirituality, tradition and experimentation. The Scottish musician 69dB has joined forces with Kynsie, the dancer of Reunionese and Ivorian origin, uniting and improvising in a technoid therapy session based on tribal and maloya cultures, to name just two” Pan African Music
‘The Rooted Sky’ is the debut album by Wave Arising – the seasoned tekno pioneer Sebastian Vaughan, and the dancer/choreographer/video maker Kynsie. Together they offer an alternative frequency of rave culture, centred around the initiatic process and transformative benefits of music, movement and meditation.
Saturated to the core with Vaughan’s inherent substance, accumulated across a lifetime’s experience at the vanguard of free parties, on listening it’s easy to envisage how The Rooted Sky could open doors hitherto closed. Offering an elevator to a higher state, this intense cerebral incantation summons an overwhelming sense of spiritual power.
As refreshing and energised as the practices they proffer, the album has a crystalline clarity, facing forward with positive, questing experimentalism. Using drum machines, guitar, field recordings, synths, voices, junk and kitchen percussion, each track is a different environment, which together form stepping stones across the astral plane.
Traversing abstract techno, polyrhythmic tech funk, deconstructed dub, shimmering psych, endless reverbs, acidic frequencies, hypnotic repetitions, unusual time signatures and meditative ambience, the album stands out as something special. The sense that it originates from outside of the norm, and is liberated from the conventions of square society, is palpable.
Wave Arising are part of the Dharma Techno collective, and since 2015 they’ve guided participants though therapeutic and mind-expanding experiences at their own annual festivals, and others including Modem (Croatia), Waking Life (Portugal) and Ethereal Decibel (France). The pair host performances/gatherings/workshops where live music, dance, improvisation and meditation form an interconnected whole. They see the body mind and soul as boundless fields of exploration, which can access and acquiesce with the invisible stream of life force known as Qi.
“Dance and music that lead to meditation and trance are ancestral practices making it possible to access our deeper consciousness. This access allows us to not only realize what is going on inside and outside us in a finer way, but also awakens our feelings of connection, oneness and authenticity. This is what we want to share and reconnect with; an intuitive listening to the senses and inner energies, inviting us to dive deep into the present moment.” Wave Arising
The duo both respect and appreciate conventional rave culture, having participated in and enjoyed it for many years, but their mission is to promote rituals of a different kind. Another key element for them is circular dancefloors, which remove the DJ as focal point, thus allowing the beneficial qualities of personal and shared experience to become more fully and mindfully felt. Their gatherings are also recommended to be enjoyed drug and alcohol free, allowing for a purer, more unfettered and clear connection to what they call The Source.
